Questions About Doll Making
What material do you use to sculpt doll heads?
I use a commercial product called "Super Sculpey." This product is made of polymer clay and cures at a temperature of about 250°, reached easily in a conventional oven.
Do you sculpt an entire doll body?
I sometimes sculpt an entire doll body from Super Sculpey, particularly if a great deal of the body will show (see Kai). But I also build doll bodies using soft sculpture techniques. All bodies have metal armatures for strength and support.
What is the metal used in your armatures?
I use several - brass or aluminum wire. In either case, I use heavy guages. My aluminum armatures, when complete, look very much like human skeletons, with flexable joints, making them posable.
How do you achieve such delicate coloration of the skin?
I use a variety of media for achieving this - acrylic paints and hard and soft pastels. The pastels are crushed into fine powder and applied with brushes. Acrylics are usually used to paint pupils and enhance the outer details of the eyes, as well as adding refinemants to the lips, nose, ears and hands (skin folds, expression lines, creases, etc.).
Questions About Commissions
Why can't I just buy one of the dolls pictured on the site?
Some of the dolls pictured on my site are already sold. In addition, I make only one-of-a-kind dolls, that is, I do not make more than one of ANY doll. However, you may ask me to create a one-of-a-kind doll for you. It may be based on a doll you have seen here, but it will not exactly duplicate that doll.
How do I commission you?
I have a convenient form on the site that you may use. Fill it out and I'll get back to you about price and how long the doll may take to make. Then we agree to a firm price. Go here for more commission details.
